During the holiday season, I was spending the day with my wife’s/co-founder’s family when my sister-in-law brought up a recent surprise bill that she received for what they thought was a routine medical procedure. Those present had the reaction of people who were reliving their own painful experiences. Some spoke up with specific horror stories of their own. The tone as we changed the subject was, “Well…that’s the way it is and will always be.”
A few minutes later, my wife asked me about current data resources that might be able to help us crawl out of the randomness of medical care. She wanted to know if we were truly hopeless. It was in that moment in my ugly Christmas sweater that we realized we might be living in a time where data resources are reaching the tipping point of becoming obtainable enough for us to try to help.
We did some research on resources with lots of skeptical conversations blended with rejection before finding a partner organization in the Center for Improving Value in Health Care (CIVHC) out in Colorado. From that point, the real work began in making sure we learned all of the clinical nuances to ensure accuracy for the patients and doctors that we would be privileged enough to help.
Healthy Price was born out of frustration for the secrecy and randomness of a system that appears to actively work against itself at times. While we can’t guarantee that we’ll solve all problems within health care, we won’t rest until every patient and doctor has total transparency of specific care decisions throughout the entire country in the palm of their hands via a clean mobile application. It’s a long and complex road, but we’re grateful for anyone willing to trust us with the task.
